Rising insurance costs making life tough for Black doctors

The escalating cost of malpractice insurance is leading Illinois doctors to pack up and move out-of-state in search of lower costs, according to a panel of experts Tuesday.

Speaking at a session at the 34th annual Rainbow/PUSH conference at the Sheraton Hotel & Towers, the group of Black physicians said the healthcare crisis isn't limited to the 43 million Americans who don't have health insurance.

Dr. William Johnson, medical director at the Luck Care Center on the South Side, said with many doctors facing six-figure loans from medical school, the last thing they need are ever-increasing insurance costs.
